Marantz/s 7.2 channel AV7005 gives you superb audio quality thanks partially to Marantz-own HDAM modules and renown Marantz design.

  • 7.1ch AV pre-amplifier with network capability
  • Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD, Audyssey DSX
  • Network streaming for audio and photo**
  • Internet radio
  • Current Feedback circuitry with Marantz HDAM
  • 6in / 2out HDMI 1.4a (3D)
  • Video scaling up to 1080p
  • iPod/iPhone compatible USB input
  • Phono MM amplifier
  • M-DAX2
  • GUI
  • Multi room/Multi source
  • RS232C
  • Learnable Remote Control

The audio signal is passed to the XLR outputs and the separate power amp. In addition, all audio signals enter the DSP in a variety of ways to ensure that all channels are kept completely separate, thus eliminating interfering ‘channel crosstalk’. For example, you can route the audio signal via the network jack for streaming music from your PC or Internet radio.

Alternatively, you can route it via one of the six HDMI1.4a inputs, one of which is hidden behind the front flap for easy access. Here you can also find the iPod-digital-compatible USB input and a second double line display, which complements the famous elegant circular display with more detailed information. The AV7005 also takes supreme care of 3D video signals, even in stand-by mode, and sends them to the two HDMI1.4a output sockets.

And there is even a Phono MM input – ideal for those precious vinyls. It supports all the latest sound formats including Audyssey DSX by using the Sharc 32Bit signal processor from Analog Devices, also for handling the MultEQ XT auto calibration. It’s all there, just waiting to perform.

Designed to match the following power amplifiers: MM8003 -MM7055 - MM7025

Marantz AV7005 Multi-Channel HD 3D AV Pre-Amplifier Reviews

Audioholics Online A/V Magazine by Tom Andry - 7 January 2011

First impression: Gotta have it!

Having all the latest decoding is a must and the AV7005 doesn't disappoint. Featuring Dolby ProLogic IIz and Audyssey DSX, you can now implement height and width channels to enhance your home theater experience. For those with front projection systems in particular (or just very, very large displays), these additional speakers can really help increase the realism and immersion during movies.

Of course you'll want state of the art room correction to go along with this and the AV7005 provides not only Audyssey MultEQ XT but also the Pro option. This gives the user the ability to correct for room deficiencies while providing the trained professional the tools to fine-tune the system to provide the best possible performance.

All the latest decoding, top of the line processing and room correction, dual subwoofer outputs, GUI overlay, HDMI to HDMI scaling... the list goes on.

Home Theater Review by Tracy Rainwater - 16 May 2011

The Marantz AV7005 Preamp/Processor is a powerhouse, costing a mere fraction of most home theater preamps, there is a lot to love right off the bat.

On the audio front, the AV7005 can decode and process anything you throw at it. Bottom line, when it comes to surround sound and matrix audio formats the AV7005 has you covered.

Video-wise, the AV7005 includes one of the best upscaling chips on the market, Anchor Bay's 10-bit Video Processor/Scaler.

The AV7005 came shipped securely in a double-walled cardboard box. Inside, it was suspended in Styrofoam to protect the corners and wrapped to protect the finish from scratches.

The manual you will want to keep near by. The feature set in the AV7005 is physically deep, and the manual will make it much easier to really tweak your setup.

The remote was a pleasant surprise and had a well-balanced feel to it. The backlit feature makes it easy to navigate while the small LCD window at the top tells you what device you are currently controlling. The remote comes pre-programmed for tons of different AV devices though you can also add your own using the program mode, which is where I was able to quickly setup the remote to control all the gear in my rack.

The actual setup could not have been easier. The setup process is automatically launched when you plug in the included Audyssey calibrated microphone to the AV7005's front mounted setup mic jack. The automated setup detects what speakers are connected to the amp, how far they are located for delay purposes, crossover points, speaker levels and overall room EQ. It took about 10 minutes for the whole process to complete and the results were accurate, at least for my tastes and room.

The film's (Star Trek 2009) lossless Dolby TrueHD soundtrack offers up just the right mix of wide multi-channel soundstage, wall shaking low frequency effects and plenty of dialogue to properly evaluate the AV7005's prowess as a home theater preamp. After hearing this same film on two different receivers and another preamp, I was pleasantly surprised. The film's soundstage was wide and detailed. The ambient sound especially on board the Enterprise, really give you the feeling of being on board the ship. Compared to my previous AVR, the sound was much more dimensional and realistic.

After a few manual EQ tweaks, I heard a renewed sound quality and presentation that totally blew away any AV receiver that I have ever owned.

Jazz bass is one of the few instruments that I feel can make you system sound great or a big muddy mess. I was blown away with how tight and resonate Bromberg's instrument sounded. Even during times where he is playing a flurry of notes, the sound was clear and full of harmonics that would've been easily lost on inferior equipment.

Streaming with the AV7005 was extremely simple. After connecting the Ethernet cable to the rear panel, the preamp quickly connected itself to my home network. Navigating to my media server was a breeze. I was able to stream MP3s, JPEG photos and even FLAC audio files.

... for me the AV7005 is all the AV preamp I require and for its asking price it has little competition.

All in all Marantz has produced a quality home theater preamp in the AV7005 that falls into a price bracket with few competitors and at a price everyone can afford. The fact that AV7005 has a retail price less than its predecessor speaks volumes about Marantz's commitment to value.

... overall the AV7005 proved to be a stellar all-rounder that when paired with a quality power amp took my home theater to a whole new level of performance. The AV7005 from Marantz is one AV preamp I'm not about to let go of nor stop recommending to my friends and family, which is precisely why I bought my review sample. It is that good.

Audio Visual Revolution by Andre Marc - December 2010  (reviewed with the MM7055)

Absolute killer performance ... offered a clarity and definition I have not experienced before ... These are keepers.

The list of features and the connectivity capabilities of the AV7005 are mind boggling. And that may be an understatement.

Setting up the Marantz pair was pretty straight forward. I would estimate that someone who is moderately knowledgeable about home theater components could have these up and running in under an hour.

... sound quality and ease of use was off the charts good. I judge that by how crystal clear dialogue was when watching movies and digital cable. Surround mixes were remarkable in their life-like spread of ambient sounds while watching TV shows and DVDs.

For the first time, I saw the value in 5.1 mixes on some classic albums ... It was quite an experience to feel surrounded by the instruments while listening to songs I have only heard in stereo for decades. I admit to being hooked on the way the Marantz pair allowed me to enjoy fatigue free listening for extended periods at fairly lifelike volumes.

The 7005 also provides fast and reliable HDMI video switching ... The picture quality was actually better when using the 7005 for video switching than routing HDMI cables from the various sources into the HDTV directly. This could be due to the inclusion of the latest Anchor Bay 10-bit Video Processor/Scaler. It was easy to tell the difference.

The 7005 processor is way more than a home theater hub. It also accepts an Ethernet connection so you may use it with several online services like Rhapsody and Flickr. I was able to go on to Flickr and browse through picture galleries with great ease and speed.

The 7005 is Bluetooth compatible, and allows for digital iPod connectivity. The 7005 also allows for multi zone operation. In case you thought they forgot something, there is an on board Moving Magnet Phono input. Vinyl and iPods can live happily together.

I plugged my iPod Nano into the USB slot and scrolled through the folders, enjoying excellent sound. I also plugged in a thumb drive loaded with JPEG files from a recent Hawaii vacation, blown away by the ability to see my pictures in high definition on a big screen, instead of the usual computer or laptop screen. I did a bit of listening to CDs to get a grip on the combo’s 2 channel performance. What I got was excellent musicality, typical of the Marantz product line. You can also create “surround stereo” which means it will take a stereo source and route it to all your speakers.

The long list of on board features are not just parlor tricks, they all work and work well. Not only was there gobs of power from the 7055, but crystal clear dialogue and vocals from the center channel speaker, a real clarity and presence from every other channel, floor shaking bass, and an overall quality of sound that belies the price tag.

The 7005 processor and preamp is a true marvel ... It offers a multitude of surround sound modes, endless connectivity options, HDMI switching, USB inputs, networking, and excellent set up flexibility. The inclusion of Audyssey is a huge plus, and I found it to be a valuable asset.

The 7005 and 7055 were very impressive across the board, and across all the functions packed into these two boxes that would have taken up an entire room years ago at a cost unaffordable to all but the most fortunate. I believe Marantz has hit it out of the park on their new line of AV products. They are future proof, offer endless flexibility and connectivity even to older components, and make use of technology from Marantz’s high end Reference Series, all in a highly attractive, distinguished looking package. Beware, for if you decide to jump in, you may find yourself upgrading your speakers, cables, and accessories to make them commensurate with the performance of the 7005 and 7055.

These are keepers.
