With CDs replaced with digital audio (MP3, FLAC, etc) and streaming audio, it makes sense for the audio player to evolve: presenting Marantz's Network Audio Player, the NA7004.
The NA7004 is your ideal connection to your favourite music, no matter where it comes from – whether it’s from your PC, external hard disc, or as an FM, AM or DAB+ radio station broadcast in your country, or even on the other side of the world via Internet radio. The NA7004 connects to them all.
Watch the NA7004 Network Audio Player overview on Aussie Hi Fi's YouTube channel (0:51).
You’ll find high quality parts throughout the NA7004. Chosen only after extensive listening tests, they contribute exceptional performance levels to critical circuits. In the analogue section, Marantz-proprietary HDAM SA2 circuits handle critical buffering and stage-to-stage signal transition. Symmetrical signal traces help maintain perfect synchronisation between Left and Right channels for rock-stable imaging and a convincing soundstage.
An impedance-matching copper plate inside the rear panel just behind the analogue outputs improves signal-to-noise performance and channel separation to preserve the NA7004’s outstanding imaging capabilities.
A shield around the digital outputs is but a further detail in Marantz’s quest for quieter operation as it prevents digital noise from affecting sensitive analog circuits.
While it meets the digital-convenience demands of today’s music lover the NA7004 also delivers sound quality that speaks to Marantz’ leading position in the world of high end audio. Indeed, the NA7004 represents a rare marriage of current feature-set with high performance audio circuitry.
The Cirrus CS4398 stereo D/A Converter offers several advantages. An advanced multi-bit Delta-Sigma architecture handles 24-bit/192kHz digital signals, and boasts extraordinary dynamic range as well as equally exceptional signal-to-noise performance so your digital music files provide the warmth, detail, and resolution you demand.
The headphone output includes a high-speed current buffer circuit for minimal interference with the main audio output circuit, maximum articulation, stability, and fatigue-free listening.
Front and rear panel USB inputs expand your musical horizons as never before. Now you can enjoy your iPhone and iPod audio via a digital connection and hear them anew though your audio system courtesy of the NA7004’s advanced circuitry. USB connectivity supports 24-bit files at sampling rates from 32 to 96 kHz for high fidelity playback of all your on-the-go music.
This network audio player is even ideal for people with no network installed in the home. Simply hook-up the NA7004 via USB connector on the back to your PC and it will recognize the NA7004 as an external sound card. That’s the most direct way to enjoy excellent quality. And there’s more: digital inputs, iPod-digital-compatible USB and optional Bluetooth reception. This is versatility in the extreme, but amazingly it’s also extremely easy to operate via the large display.
The Marantz Wizz App transfers control of the CR603 into the palms of iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch owners (Wizz App is a free download from the iTunes App Store). A beautifully designed GUI combines with an intuitive layout enabling a superbly easy way to control Marantz products via a home network.
The Airplay feature allows you to easily stream music from your iTunes collections to the CR603 with just the tap of a finger. (The NA7004 must be hard-wired to a LAN (or Wireless Bridge) in order to use AirPlay.)
Don’t forget wireless audio either. Just plug the optional RX101 Bluetooth module into the NA7004’s rear panel M-XPort connector and enjoy traditional Marantz sound quality from your favorite Bluetooth-capable sources such as iPod, iPad and smart-phones.
In addition to your iPod and iPhone files, you can access high definition digital music files from the web or “push” them from your computer through NA7004 to the rest of your system.
The NA7004 accepts data from any USB storage device from flash drive to hard drive.
The NA7004’s Ethernet connection incorporates technology based on the DLNA1.5 standard (Digital Living Network Alliance) for audio streaming. This functionality can also be found in other products, but here it is much more directed to music lovers and audiophiles, because Marantz has done everything to ensure top-quality audio: rigid cabinet structure, strong power supply, audio output stage applying the famous HDAM-SA2, and fine-tuning by customised components.

Marantz's NA7004 is the first 'proper' hi-fi product to make streaming simple
What really and truly delighted us was the sheer ease, simplicity and reliability with which the NA7004 switched between its selection of inputs: it provided carefree access to an endless variety and flow of music at the touch of the input button.
There is a definite pride of ownership vibe about this unit. Despite being inexpensive, it looks, and is, very elegant. Furthermore, it is robustly built. It is also reassuringly simple to operate.

Setup of the NA7004 was a breeze. I connected an Ethernet network cable from the NA7004 to my router, a pair of RCA cables to an input pair on my receiver, the power cord, and I was good to go. I turned on the player and the NA7004 automatically configured itself via DHCP on my network.
After a couple minutes of auto-configuration, the NA7004 came up on Internet Radio as its default input. The vTuner application determined where I was in the world and automatically populated a list of local channels. I selected a local channel and was listening to music. I was delighted with just how simple this device was to get up and running.
I generally have low expectations when listening to internet radio, but I was frequently surprised at how good some of the channels sounded on the NA7004. For example, one of our local university stations, WJCU 88.7 FM, was streaming at 128 kbps while major stations here in Cleveland were only streaming at 64 kbps. The difference was very noticeable. At the other end of the spectrum was Linn Radio streaming at 320 kbps. This offered a superb listening experience on the NA7004 and also gave me a chance to preview some of the content in Linn’s high resolution audio store. The NA7004 allows you to add up to 50 internet radio stations to a “Favorites” list. The list can be directly accessed via the “Favorites” input on the NA7004.
Overall, I was very impressed with the sound quality of the NA7004. Given all the inputs and the varied formats, this player did an excellent job rendering music.
What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision
Flexibility; comprehensive specification; tantalising upgrades to come; fast, dynamic sound across a wide range of music.

If you're looking for a network music player packed with features and sparkling audio then the Marantz NA7004 is a one-stop shop.
Even with low-quality files the player was able to dig up plenty of detail and bass weight, and was indeed the equal of the wireless Arcam rDAC we were using as a comparison. In addition, we found little difference between listening to a file through AirPlay and one delivered from the network server through the on-board media browser.
If you don't feel confident rooting around in the innards of your desktop computer this is an even better way to deliver high-quality audio from your PC. If you have an old CD player with a digital out, the NA7004 could become the new centrepiece of your system.
Great sound, the convenience of a single box, plus the addition of AirPlay makes this one of the best stereo components we've come across in a while.
