The MK S150 THX is the speaker system that made MK SOUND the choice of professionals. Not only is it the audiophile 5.1 channel standard, it is one of the most popular systems in multi-channel studios today.

"For over 10 years we’ve trusted in MK speakers for our sound design rooms, as well as our picture and sound editing suites. We couldn’t have made the Star Wars prequels or our Young Indiana Jones documentaries without them. MK monitors continue to be our speaker of choice."
Rick McCallum, Producer, Star Wars Episode I, II, III" & The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles

About the MK 150THX System

  • 3 x S-150THX Front Speakers
  • 2 x SS-150 THX Tripole Surround Speakers
  • 1 x MX-350 THX Powered Subwoofer

The 150 THX is the speaker system that made MK SOUND “the choice of professionals.” Not only is it the audiophile 5.1 channel standard, it is one of the most popular systems in multi-channel studios today.

This is the classic MK SOUND THX Ultra monitoring system found in hundreds of professional studios, including Skywalker Ranch, and thousands of home theatres. Its musical sound, wide dynamics, and excellent imaging make it the choice of professionals and enthusiasts for both movies and music. Despite the compact size of the satellites (less than a single cubic foot), the system produces amazing output levels with tremendous clarity and low distortion.

The 150THX system employs MK SOUND’s breakthrough Phase-Focused™ crossover technology. The crossover is computer-designed for the ultimate in coherent response over a wide and controlled listening window (including in the vertical plane, which is critical when surround speakers are located above listeners’ heads). This unique crossover is critically tuned through both psychoacoustic analysis and complex computer time-domain analysis to achieve a uniform timbre balance throughout the listening room.

If you want your movies and music to sound they way they did when the producers and engineers were creating them, this is the speaker system to own. Front and rear satellites incorporate effective magnetic shielding with MK SOUND’s high-performance Ferromagnetic Shielding System. Magnetic shielding of the subwoofer bass drivers means that you can even place the subwoofer near the television or CPU for the ultimate in flexibility.

In 1991, MK SOUND became one of the first manufacturers to join George Lucas and his Lucasfilm Home THX program. The original THX program was created to ensure that movie theatres meet strict quality standards. The THX logo immediately became recognized as a seal of approval for quality-conscious cinema goers around the world. Today, THX Ultra is the highest, independent quality standard dedicated to the accurate reproduction of multichannel audio sources in the home. The MK SOUND 150 THX system meets or exceeds THX Ultra specifications to deliver music and movies with natural, effortless realism and power.

About the MK S-150THX: THX ULTRA LCR

The razor-sharp imaging of the S150THX is due in part to innovative front-baffle foam treatments, cabinet design, and in great part to the Phase-Focused™ crossover.

The crossover combines three important design elements: Time Domain Analysis, Frequency Domain Analysis, and Point-in-Space Analysis (a three-dimensional analysis of the speaker’s actual response in the room). While other crossover designs consider just frequency response on one axis, MK Sound considers response at various angles in both the vertical and horizontal planes, optimizing the speaker’s three-dimensional response. This critically tuned crossover yields very smooth response over a wide listening window (very important for home theatre) and even provides a more focused and coherent sound on-axis.

Three high-quality 1” fabric-dome tweeters are aligned in a vertical array, each utilizing a unique, specially designed polymeric-damped cavity for superior sound. The S150THX dual high-performance 5¼” polypropylene woofers produce powerful, richly detailed low frequencies.

Acclaimed by critics as “very possibly the finest rear speaker ever created” the SS150 THX Tripole® combines the diffuse, spacious sound of a dipole speaker with the immediacy and imaging capability of the best direct radiators.

Each SS150 THX Tripole® operates as two speakers at the same time: first, a near-ideal point source direct radiator (on the front baffle) with an MK SOUND Phase- Focused™ crossover feeding its 5¼” woofer and 1” soft-dome tweeter. The second is a dipole speaker using two unique high performance 3¼” polypropylene cone mid-tweeters (with ferrofluid cooling).

These drivers achieve a very smooth and transparent sound from 300 Hz through the critical midrange and beyond, due in part to the fact that they operate without any mid-range crossover (meaning optimum phase and sonic coherency).

The MK Sound MX350THX subwoofer uses dual ultra high performance, long-throw 12” magnetically shielded drivers, capable of extremely high output with superb articulation, clarity and authority. The onboard power amplifiers employ MK SOUND Balanced Push-Pull Dual Drive Amplifier technology, which incorporates proprietary Headroom Maximizer IV circuitry to prevent amplifier clipping and the resulting unwanted audible artefacts.

Delivering massive power, these innovative amplifiers give you extremely clean sound and extraordinary articulation, along with enormous output and incredible dynamic range. MK SOUND’s Deep Bass sealed-box design produces significant low frequency extension, with in-room response flat to well below 20 Hz for lifelike power and authority that other subwoofers simply cannot match.

MK SOUND’s Push-Pull Dual Driver Configuration delivers a major improvement in bass detail and articulation by virtually eliminating even-order harmonic distortion and doubling the sound power per watt of amplifier power, for 6 dB of additional output.

MK 150THX System Reviews

I'll tell you one thing: If you value bass impact and extension, you'd be hard-pressed to find a rival for the M&K system. I may have heard the MX-150's equal at preserving the transient impact of low-frequency sound, but I have certainly never heard their superior.

The 150 front-channel speakers are superb. They sound, for the most part, extremely natural and uncolored. I qualify that statement because they can lean toward hardness and sibilance—or could it be that they are accurately reflecting the bright and unforgiving nature of most soundtracks themselves.

I heard details in films that had previously passed un-noticed.

What really impressed me about the 150 front channels, though, was how effortlessly they reported what was on the soundtrack. Even if you played the speakers really loud, you couldn't make them strain.

As to the Tripole surrounds, they worked as promised in my relatively small home theater. In that room, the rear wall can be dominant with dipoles, so the "even illumination" of the Tripole seemed an improvement. Taking Ken Kreisel's point about the fallacy of assuming only one row of listeners, I tried moving around in the room. Sure enough, the Tripole did not change its character when I sat forward or farther back. For many people, this could be a significant surround option.

I had my head turned by the natural, dynamic, and uncolored sound of this THX surround-speaker system. The individual speakers are built to a very high standard and M&K has incorporated a wide range of user-friendly options and accessories. It is competitive with the very finest surround systems I've heard, and in some areas—specifically deep bass extension and impact—is second to none.

In my heart of hearts, I prefer the Aerial Acoustics system, but you can buy the entire M&K system, including stands, brackets, pipes, and two subwoofers, for just a few hundred dollars more than the Aerial 10Ts alone — making the S-150s a bargain.

That's one heck of a bargain. If you can find a better one, buy it on the spot.

Feel the Force: A 5.1 speaker system with Star Wars approval

Big boxes that sound rich, sweet, damned loud and breathtakingly dynamic. Cranked up, and it just got louder without any trace of stress or effort. The resulting sound makes them professional grade. Read full review here

We have been using the M&K S150 system as reference quality audio for all of our reviews and have not had the urge to change speakers in eight years.

The sonic character of the new S-150THX maintains a well-focused image with minimal vertical dispersion to keep floor and ceiling reflections under control. The result is a focused sound without secondary reflections to blur the image.

The sound produced by the S-150THX speakers were both articulate and powerful, something not always easy for a speaker to do. We can see why they work so well for studio engineers who mix movie soundtracks. What I like most about the S-150THX design is the ability to drive these speakers hard and still get a satisfying and non-fatiguing sound from them. The new S-150THX is excellent and has much of the same character of the original design.

The MK Sound S-150 speaker system is designed for the serious audio and home theater enthusiast with five S-150THX channels and a single MX-350THX subwoofer. Build quality of this system is excellent and sets it apart from most of the multi-channel speaker systems we have reviewed. We were very pleased with the performance with music as well as movies.

Blu-Ray movie soundtracks were exceptionally clear and subtle nuances were reproduced with fine textures.

The MK Sound S-150 system provided the ability to reproduce the soundtrack in its entirety from the subtle mechanical movements to the thunderous explosions of rocket engines firing. The MX-350THX subwoofer not only reproduced deep bass from these scenes, but did so in a way that didn't sound muddy or boomy. Bass reproduction was tight and punchy with the authority of well designed subwoofer. Even at higher levels the MX-350THX produced excellent bass without breaking up or bottoming out.

We are pleased with the new S-150THX speakers and MX-350THX subwoofer and believe customers will be quite happy with the build and sound quality. The original S-150THX speakers have a well established history in the professional audio industry with numerous awards for "Best Sound" on many popular soundtracks.  Read full review here
