Easy: just continue the same painstaking philosophy of product dedication, keep even the tiniest of details at the top of mind, do everything possible to optimise mechanism and potent power supply, insist on premium digital-to-analogue conversion with CS4398, and ensure a mirrored symmetrical output stage with Marantz-own HDAM-SA2 amplifiers.

And when all that is done, check it all again and fine-tune with even more specially selected components. Marantz also added a solid metal bottom-plate and centralised the CD mechanism’s location.

That is how, for example, vibration has been virtually eliminated. In addition, the stable, oversized power supply feeds the digital and analogue circuitry of the player, where the high-quality CS4398 converts digital signals to analogue, this is then ‘pushed’ to the gold-plated synch outputs by Marantz’s own small signal amplifier, the HDAM-SA2. Altogether the CD6004 is a match made in heaven for the music lover who wants nothing but the best performance at an attractive price. And one more thing it’s also perfect for lovers of portable music, thanks to its iPod-digital connectivity.

Marantz CD6004 CD Player Features

Customised Components: On paper an electrical component might look excellent but the result may fall short of the combined design expectations. Marantz selects the appropriate components for the specific design application. In some cases it’s simply not possible to use standard components that meet the high Marantz standards. These components will then be specially made for Marantz in close cooperation with the Marantz engineers.

HDAM SA2: Marantz developed its own discrete circuit boards to replace standard IC's. These HDAM's consists of discrete surface mount components with short mirror image L/R signal paths. Those devices are doing exactly the same thing as the Op-Amps, but outperform the regular IC Op-amps dramatically in terms of the Slew Rate and reduced noise level, resulting in a much more dynamic, accurate and detailed sound. Over the years Marantz developed different types of the HDAM to improve quality and to fit to the special requirements of a product category like CD or amplifier.

Symmetrical Circuit Layout: To achieve the best possible sonic performance, signal paths need to be short, direct and mirror imaged. The construction of our circuitry provides improved stereo imaging by ensuring close to perfect symmetry between right and left channel layout.

It’s a bold move to change a product that most people consider to be at the top of its game ... the CD6004’s predecessor is our reigning CD player champion under £500.

... a new CD mechanism, upgraded power supply, brand new DAC, new amplifier module and a new, vibration-eliminating solid metal bottom-plate ... and the USB port on the front, which could always digitally access iOS devices, can now charge iPads as well as iPods and iPhones.

Blimey, those upgrades on the CD6004 really have made big improvements to what was already an extremely accomplished performance.

... the delivery is significantly more spacious and open, the vocals are clearer and more focused, and individual instruments have more space around them but are still rhythmically glued together to create a pleasingly complete presentation. There’s an extra smidge of subtlety to detail and dynamics, too, so you get a little more of the reverb and echo on the voice – in other words, the disc sounds more as it was intended.

Essentially it’s cleaner, clearer and more interesting than its predecessor, and in the best possible way you’re less aware of the player itself, especially when you take advantage of the ‘display off’ and ‘digital off’ options.

Of course, a component that is individually superb can flop when paired, but that’s far from the case here. Connect the CD6004 to the Marantz PM6004 amplifier and it’s immediately clear that they’ve been tuned to complement each other.
