"Outstanding. We're smitten." 5 Stars + Editors' Choice Award. - CNet UK  Aug 2011
2012 Audio Component of the Year - Electronic House

  • Slim design - half the height of traditional receivers
  • Full networking capability and AirPlay for music streaming
  • Four HDMI 1.4a inputs for added connectivity and 3D support
  • Inbuilt 192kHz/24-bit DAC for pure, high definition audio
  • Easy on-screen set-up plus Audyssey for perfect audio calibration

Offering all of the NR1402 features, with full networking, Airplay and optional powered zone 2 added, the step-up member of Marantz’s slim component AVR family, the NR1602, is even more remarkable for what it can achieve in such a compact chassis!

Building on 2010’s hugely successful NR1601, this new 7.1-capable Receiver delivers room-filling quality sound thanks to the discrete built 7x 50 W RMS output stages.

At just over 10cm high and 37cm deep, the NR1602 can fit on a standard-size shelf with room to spare. The slim design means extra space for all your cable connections without a cluttered look. Most importantly, the compact design is not at the expense of power, nor of features.

On the video side, the four HDMI 1.4 inputs all support 3D video and Audio Return Channel (ARC), while all analogue video signals are converted to HDMI level including I/P conversion. The on-board Ethernet port allows for audio streaming from home networks or subscription-based web-services, and gives access to over 14,000 Internet radio stations worldwide.

Marantz’s NR1602 even has the hot AirPlay feature already built-in that lets you unleash your iTunes or iPhone/iPod touch/iPad music libraries to the AV Receiver. Thanks to the network connection, the AV Receiver can easily be controlled through a free Marantz Wizz App for Apples iDevices.

Add a front USB input with digital iPod/iPhone playback, Audyssey MultEQ room calibration, Dynamic Volume and Dynamic EQ, as well as an easy setup guided by the multi-language Setup Wizard with on screen-display, and you realise this neat machine is not short on talent. It fits high-end performance into a beautifully compact chassis, hence satisfying the most demanding of interior designers.
  • 50 Watts x 7 fully discrete channels
  • Front panel digital USB input for iPod, iPhone, flash drives and HDDs
  • “One Touch” play for USB flash drives – plays music and photos with only one button press!
  • Full DLNA networking capability for playback of music and photos from a PC or NAS
  • In-built internet radio by vTuner for access to over 14,000 free internet radio stations
  • AirPlay pre-installed at factory for streaming music from iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, or PC/MAC with iTunes
  • IP controllable from a PC web browser, plus control on an iDevice using free Wizz App
  • Assignable Surround Back Amplifiers for discrete Zone 2 use
  • Full analogue video conversion to HDMI
  • Preset-coded and learning remote control

On-Screen Wizard Simplifies Setup
The NR1402 AV Receiver features auto setup and room calibration and allows you to navigate setup on your TV screen via HDMI. Plug in the included calibration microphone, place it in your favorite seat, and run the setup wizard. The Audyssey MultEQ automatically analyses your room's acoustic properties to determine the optimal settings. If you wish, you can manually fine-tune individual settings, such as bass, treble, speaker distance, and other properties.

Networking Capability for Music Streaming
Built-in networking functionality makes the NR1602 an ideal media centre. The Ethernet port lets you stream audio from online music services as well as from your home network. Additionally, built-in AirPlay allows you to stream music wirelessly from your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. You can also access Internet radio stations with the built-in v-Tuner. As an added convenience, the NR1602's two-zone capability lets you listen to music in one room while playing a movie in another.

HDMI Inputs Allow Multiple Digital Connections
The NR1602 features four HDMI inputs that provide superior video and audio with digital clarity. Support for Deep Color and x.v.Color schemes, which display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes, results in a lifelike, vibrant picture.

Using a single cable, you can easily connect any HDMI-equipped source or display to the receiver. With support for 3D-capable TV and Blu-ray players, the NR1602 has you covered with HDMI 1.4a compatibility designed specifically for 3D.

There's also a built-in video converter for watching composite and component video sources on your TV via HDMI. That means you'll be able to enjoy yesterday's, today's, and tomorrow's media with ease.

Seven Audio Channels Produce a Theatre-Like Experience
For an enveloping surround sound experience, the NR1602's amplifier delivers seven 50-watt channels of equal power and quality. The result is a balanced sound field capable of faithfully reproducing the most demanding movie, gaming, and multi-channel audio.

A 2.1 channel preamp output offers system upgrade possibilities. Use the Dolby Pro Logic IIz feature to add vertical dimension to the front soundstage or add additional speakers to the rear of your room with Dolby Pro Logic IIx.

Clear, Pure Audio in High Def
The NR1602's high-definition audio support lets you take advantage of the latest surround sound formats. From Dolby TrueHD to DTS-HD Master audio, the NR1602's on-board decoding reproduces clear, uncompressed 7.1 audio via HDMI.

There's also a 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) for all channels and an isolated audio circuit board for improved sound and minimal interference. Source Direct mode switches off all unused circuitry for the purest audio possible.

M-XPort for Bluetooth Devices
Enjoy audio playback from a variety of sources, including laptops and cell phones, using the M-XPort input. By connecting an RX-101 Bluetooth receiver module (sold separately) to the NR1602, you can wirelessly stream audio signals from Bluetooth devices that feature A2DP compatibility.

Front-Panel USB Connection for MP3 Devices
A front-panel USB connection allows direct playback of iPod, iPhone, and USB drives. M-DAX onboard audio expansion circuitry, MDAX, restores your compressed audio files to supply missing high-frequency information, resulting in near-CD sound quality.

Marantz NR1602 Slim-line HD AV Receiver Reviews

Electronic House
2012 Audio Component of the Year

CNet UK - Editors' Choice Aug 11 - 5 Stars - Reviewed by Steve May 17 Aug 2011
Marantz has brought some much-needed flair to the humble AV receiver with the slim-line NR1602. Network-savvy and offering siren-sweet sound, this beauty doesn't miss a beat.

Seductive, slim appearance; Gorgeous stereo and multi-channel sound; Peerless media-streaming support; AirPlay support; Great networking capability ... The NR1602 has more ports than the Atlantic coast.

The NR1602 is very easy to use. We particularly like the menu system. It's high-res and intuitive. An on-screen wizard leads you though the speaker-connection, room-tuning and system-configuration processes.

The provision of Apple AirPlay support is certain to generate interest. It allows you to wirelessly stream your iTunes library to the receiver from a networked PC or Mac, or, more entertainingly, directly from an iOS handheld device, such as an iPhone. Browsing music on an iPad, and pushing whichever tracks you fancy to your receiver is a cool way to enjoy your music.

The NR1602's network-streaming ability may be restricted to audio files, but compatibility is broad. Across our test network, the NR1602 played MP3, Ogg, WMA, WAV, FLAC and AAC files. Album art also displays when available. This level of support also applies to files played via the front-mounted USB drive. All artist, album, and genre metadata is read without confusion.

While the NR1602 may look under-powered on paper -- Marantz quotes a cautious 7x50W output -- there's genuine power to its performance. Sci-fi Blu-ray action film Battle: Los Angeles isn't short of explosive DTS-HD Master Audio drama, and the NR1609 is more than able to keep pace. Even during the most chaotic battle scenes, its delivery is fast and dynamic.

With stereo music, there's a warmth to its presentation that's beguiling. Mozart's Violin Concerto in D Major, on CD via the stereo analogue input with 'pure direct' selected, sounds sweet and light. There's no digital edge to the mid-range strings.

The Marantz NR1602 is an outstanding AV receiver. Not only is it slimmer and prettier than the competition, it's also a gorgeous performer. An audiophile lineage is evidenced in its two-channel performance, yet it's fast and fun with movies. It's also a cut above the rest when it comes to networking capability. Media streaming across a LAN is refined, and Apple AirPlay works beautifully with the iPad2 as a source. We're smitten.
