Marantz’s new SR6006 7.1 Home Theatre Receiver, with the famous Marantz circular display, looks a lot like its big brother the SR7005, but the resemblance doesn’t stop at looks.It has the same networking facilities for audio streaming, Internet radio, and AirPlay from any iDevice (iPod, iPhone and iPad).

There’s also a highly convenient HDMI on the front, and two more on the rear for simultaneous output. And, also like its brother, it has an iPod-digital-compatible USB input and a Phono MM input for vinyl fans.

But it’s not all about versatility, the SR6006 is also powerful: 7x 110W rms to be exact. And, because the digital audio signal (up to Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD) is fed via one of the seven 3D video-supporting HDMI 1.4 inputs, the resulting audiophile sound quality is utterly breath-taking.

Such high-quality audio processing also helps to create a world-class cinematic experience. An experience that is further enhanced by the system’s Dynamic Volume Control, which avoids the irritating increase in TV volume when a commercial interrupts. Networking Capability for Music Streaming
Built-in networking functionality makes the SR6006 an ideal media centre. The Ethernet port lets you stream audio from online music services as well as from your home network. Additionally, built-in Apple AirPlay allows you to stream music wirelessly from your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

You can also access Internet radio stations with the built-in v-Tuner. As an added convenience, the SR6006's three-zone capability lets you listen to music in two different rooms while playing a movie in another, while a second zone of video allows simultaneous viewing of different TV programs and movies.

The SR6006 features seven HDMI 1.4a inputs that provide uncompressed picture and audio with digital clarity, and allow ARC (Audio Return Channel) for compatible televisions. On-Screen Wizard Simplifies Setup
The receiver features auto setup and room calibration and allows you to navigate setup on your TV screen via HDMI. Plug in the included calibration microphone, place it in your favourite seat, and run the setup wizard. The Audyssey MultEQ-XT automatically analyses your room's acoustic properties to determine the optimal settings. If you wish, you can manually fine-tune individual settings, such as bass, treble, speaker distance, and other properties.

The Marantz SR6006 loads up on modern goodies like AirPlay and USB inputs without sacrificing the warm, signature Marantz sound that defined older models.

... the SR6006 is finally a full-fledged network receiver. The newly installed Ethernet port allows access to Pandora, Rhapsody, Flickr and a gazillion Internet radio stations. Since the SR6006 is DLNA certified, it will stream music, pictures and some video files from any media center, laptop, desktop computer or network attached storage (NAS) device on the same network. This Ethernet connection also allows for firmware updates that don’t require a service technician.

The most exciting change for us is the addition of a Phono input! We really missed this with the SR6004 and SR6005, and we are thrilled to see it has finally arrived with this model.

As far as our subjective tests could determine, the SR6006 sounds identical to its predecessor; which is to say, it sounds very, very good. We like the way the SR6006 adds just a touch of classic Marantz warmth to everything it plays.

Overly bright music tracks are tamed ever so slightly and brash movie tracks are brought back to reality without losing any of their zeal. Indeed, the SR6006 maintains this line’s position as one of the best-sounding A/V receivers available in its price segment.

We then busted out some of our favorite vinyl recordings and gave the SR6006’s phono input a workout. While we were not able to do a direct A/B comparison, we felt the built-in phono pre sounded very similar to the one installed in the recently reviewed PM6004 integrated. We got sparkling treble (which seems to defy the otherwise warm Marantz sound), open midrange and some pretty decent bass as well.

Certainly a step above what we’re used to getting in an A/V receiver.
