Ortofon's Japanese constructed e-Q5 in-ear monitor earphones (IEM) feature ultra micro audio engineering technology which is a culmination of nearly 100 years of tradition in pursuit of Ortofon's "Accuracy in Sound"
These e-Q5 Balanced Armature Driver earphones are designed to offer audio professionals, musicians and discerning listeners a transparent window into sonic purity, which reveals not only the details and elements which comprise the signal, but also any inadequacies or inconsistencies.
Equipped with the micro audio engine, the new e-Q5 is synonymous with powerful, transparent and crystal clear sound. In short, the e-Q5 with Balanced Armature Driver is the quintessence of miniature stereo earphone:
The newly designed e-Q5 is a based on the e-Q7 which has been critically acclaimed by music fans the world over. The natural harmonics of the eQ5 are easy on the ear so you'll never tire from prolonged listening.
Ortofon's designers have also addressed a number of issues that headphones have been plagued with in the past: cable kinking, left/right ear identification and easy storage.
The e-Q5’s newly designed cable does not develop bending fatigue ... you won't experience kinking or breaking even when it is twisted around 360 degrees. This no kink/no break cable developed by Ortofon engineering know-how guarantees noise-free, high-transparency sound throughout the entire frequency range.
To prevent ear-mismatch the right channel earphone has a red bushing on the rear - a simple, yet easy to remember solution!
Additionally, the e-Q5 is easy to store. The cable pulls out of the acoustic chamber, and can rotate 360 degrees for easy hanging on any convenient place (without worrying about it being kinked or broken, of course).
In Ear Matters December 2010
The build quality is excellent, as you would expect from a brand like Ortofon and a place like Japan (which is where the IEM is manufactured).
The overall sound signature is warm, sweet and smooth with a good sense of balance and detail, less mid focus compared to e-Q7. Bass loses a bit of impact and quantity from e-Q7, but gains better depth and slightly more texture. Mid is still sweet with good body but not quite as forward as e-Q7. While still a dominating factor in the overall sound, it allows the other frequencies to play a bigger role. Treble no longer has the slight roll off at the top and extends at a very smooth yet detailed way, sparkly while not bright in any sense. Soundstage is where I find the most improvement over e-Q7. While it might not be a lot wider, it is airier, more transparent with better depth and layers.
Sonic wise, I think e-Q5 has edged out its elder brother a little bit with a more transparent and balanced sound. With e-Q5 I like to think that the IEM gives a new definition of what is warm and sweet at its best.
