The ProLogue Classic Integrated Amplifier is the newest version of the original first members of the PrimaLuna family of affordable, high-quality tube products. The designers and builders of the PrimaLuna equipment all have a long history in high-end audio.
The KT88's premium parts include a toroidal transformer for power supply that was custom designed in conjunction with one of the most prestigious transformer designers in the USA to encapsulated output transformers for lowest hum. It also boasts wide bandwidth for great bass and extended highs; ceramic tube sockets; ALPS volume control; Nichicon and Solen capacitors; superfast Philips-diode-circuitry; gold-plated heavy duty WBT style speaker terminals (all speakerconnectors are solid shaft, without hole, for better conductance, better sound and higher reliability); and gold-plated panel mounted input jacks.
A new generation Adaptive AutoBias circuit, exclusive to PrimaLuna, monitors and smoothly adjusts bias constantly and instantly, reducing maintenance and increasing performance due to the dramatic reduction in distortion. It comes with a new extensive output stage protection circuitry with +B relay to protect output transformers, resistors and high voltage power supply in case a tube fails.
PrimaLuna's all-new PTP (Power Transformer Protection) circuit ensures that When the power transformer overheats due to environmental circumstances, overloading or some problem in the unit, an internal thermal switch breaks the primary, allowing the unit to cool down before harm is done. After it's cooled, contact is restored and if nothing is broken, the amp will repower and function properly.
The ProLogue Classic Integrated Amplifier comes with an EL34/KT88 bias switch. This means that with the flip of a switch you can choose for the optimum bias setting for EL34 type of tubes or KT88 type of tubes. No hassle with screwdrivers, no messing around with meters etc. Just switch tubes, switch bias!
Stereo Prestige & Image (issue 46)
... reliable, brings great listening pleasure, works with all kinds of speakers and sources and is endowed with a wide range of features ...
The subjective power of a good tube amplifier always appears greater than its measured power or that of a solid state amplifier of similar power output. This is a consequence of, amongst other factors, good impedance matching between the output transformer and the speakers plus crossover load. The Classic, like other PrimaLuna models, is no exception to this rule.
The clarity across all the different instrument groupings is both harmonious and natural with a perfectly balanced timbre overall - the hallmark of an excellent EL34 tube design. This is not an overly defined, razor sharp, sonic effect but rather a well-defined and coherent complete presentation like at a live concert. This feeling is reinforced by the fact that the PrimaLuna Classic seems to open up the speaker systems (the compact ones as well as the more monumental ones, which we have alternated between throughout our listening sessions) in a way that conveys an impression of a fourfold increase of the sound stage.
You would really have to invest in much more expensive tube electronics to find another amplifier with such a respect of the sonic surroundings that is evident by the spatial accuracy and correct sense of depth.
With the Classic, the vast experience acquired by this manufacturer is reflected in the rigorous design, in the production quality and in the great reliability. If you think this is too much praise, then listen to this amplifier in a double blind test against other tube or solid states amplifiers in this price range with exactly the same system configuration (including cables). The differences will be immediately apparent.
You don't need to be a great expert on comparative listening tests. The overall clarity and the spontaneity of the musical events will impose themselves on you with the ProLogue Classic when compared with other systems, not only in this price category but also with more expensive units.
Best Buys - Winter 2011
... it's got plenty of drive and attack, not something you always associate with an integrated valve amp. The PrimaLuna combined a realistic sense of scale and weight with an open, sweet treble that allowed violins, for example, to soar.
Lifelike, engaging, tender and sweet were a few superlatives that sprang to mind during our time with the Prologue Classic.
It's not too many pieces of audio equipment that get so reluctantly returned to their boxes, but this PrimaLuna was one such amplifier that left a musical hole when removed from our resident system.
It's got all the hallmarks of becoming a future classic design, combining all that is so wonderfully musically inaccurate about valve amplification, but making it reliable and dependable as well. It sounds better than it looksm, doesn't cost the earth and comes with our highest recommendation.
