Hi fi stands for “high fidelity”, and refers to the high-quality reproduction of sound (as opposed to what’s coming out of your phone or those speakers you picked up for a hundred bucks). High fidelity equipment has inaudible noise and distortion, and a flat frequency response within the intended frequency range. In plain English – it’s audio that sounds good. Really good. So good, in fact, that if you’ve got the right setup, you can close your eyes and imagine that you’re hearing the real thing. Hi fi means you’re as close to the original recording as possible.
