When it comes to audio, the speakers you choose will be the most important decision you’ll make. Forgive us for being so serious, but they can truly make or break your system. Speakers are an investment. Not only do they accomplish the complicated and important job of delivering sound, but their style and aesthetics play a huge part in your space. And your options are seemingly endless, as are the number of choices you need to make just to buy a set – size, price, performance, quality, and style, for starters.
But we’re here to help you make sense of the madness. We’ll walk you through all the things you need to keep in mind as you narrow down all the choices. And we only carry the brands and models that we know are top-notch and a great value. So let’s get started.
One of the first things you need to know when selecting a set of speakers is where and how you’re planning to use them. Is it for a home theatre system, a living room hi fi setup, a professional music studio? Knowing this can help you decide on factors like size, number of speakers, and whether you need a simple set of bookshelf speakers, huge floor speakers, or a full 7.1 surround system. Also consider whether you’d like them to mount into your ceiling or wall.
For a home theatre setup, you’ll want a centre channel speaker, a pair of front speakers (bookshelf or floor standing are good options for this), two or more surround speakers, and a subwoofer (or two).
For hi fi listening, there are a lot of different options out there depending on the acoustics of your space, your personal preferences for volume and tonal quality, and your budget. The size of your room is a huge factor in the type, size, and number of speakers you’ll need to invest in. You’ll also want to make sure you have all the connections you need, and the right cables, stands, mounts, and remotes to go with it all.
The next thing you’ll want to do is make sure your speakers match correctly with your receiver and/or amplifier. You not only need to make sure that your amp is capable of driving your speakers from a technical standpoint, but that the two will sound good together. Getting a good match is important. If you have technical questions, we’re always here to help!
