So you’ve jumped on the head fi bandwagon and picked yourself up a great new pair of headphones, so now you’re all set, right? Not so fast! If you want to get the best sound out of your fancy new headphones, you’ll want an external amp to go with them. Why? Because the amp built in to your smartphone, IPod or music player probably isn’t up to snuff. The manufacturers of these devices have a lot to pack into a little player, and a quality amp (and even sound quality in general) is usually pretty low on their priority list, especially with a device as multi-tasking as your smartphone.

The difference in sound quality you’ll hear with a dedicated external amp is incredible, and you’ll wonder how you ever listened to your music without one. When you combine an excellent set of headphones with a good amp, the resolution, dynamics, and clarity can actually sound even better than your home speaker setup, because you’re really immersed in the sound. Get ready to hear every little detail of your albums and have them all sound brand new.

Along with sound, you’ll also get a boost in power with a separate amp, and this is especially necessary in headphones with a low sensitivity and a high impedance. High end headphones benefit most from an amplifier, but even budget headphones will sound considerably better when you add an amp to them. Amps can offer a couple other features as well, like a knob for sound control, or bass boost.

The first decision you need to make when choosing a headphone amp is whether you need or want to use it on the go. Desktop amps can offer more power and sound quality, and you don’t have to charge or change batteries to use them, so if you’re staying put most of the time, this might be your best bet. However, there are a lot of portable amp options that perform spectacularly.

We carry the best brands and models in headphone amps. For portable amps, consider the FiiO E12 or E17K, the top two portable headphones according to Lifehacker. Or pick up the Oppo HA-2, rated 5 stars by What Hi Fi. They say of the HA-2 that “the engaging performance and detail retrieval is remarkable at this price.”

In desktop amps, you’ll be blown away by the Pathos Aurium, a hybrid tube amp recommended by both Inner Fidelity and What Hi Fi, who call it “a top-class choice for amplification.”

We also carry models from Acoustic Research, Arcam, Audeze, Burson Audio, Fostex, Marantz, and Rega. With all these choices, we’re sure you’ll find the perfect mate for your speakers! If you’ve got any questions about what model is best for you, or other details and specs, just give us a call or shoot us an email and we’ll be happy to help you out.
